A full formal wedding is an all-day affair! Here’s a sample of how it might go for your photographer:
2:00 arrive - get the “lay of the land” and set up off-camera lighting
2:30-3:15 bridal details: dress, shoes, rings, stationery, etc.
3:15-3:40 getting ready: makeup, hair, dress
3:45-4:10 Bride & Bridesmaids
4:15-4:30 First Look
4:35-4:55 Groom & Groomsmen + groom details
5:00-5:20 Reception details
5:30-6:00 Ceremony
6:10-6:40 Family formals
6:45-7:05 Full bridal party formals
7:10-7:30 Couple
7:30 Reception
10:00 Special Exit
Adjustments to the schedule happen, of course, to fit the day and the couple. Your photographer may ask for a shift in schedule to make sure you get those epic sunset pix, or not be squinting in the harsh mid-day sun for your ceremony. Please take their advice to heart because they’ve likely done this before. To make sure, however, ask them if they can handle situations that might be tricky (e.g., “Have you successfully photographed a late-night sparkler exit? Can I see examples?”).

At this point I only photograph small weddings of fewer than 100 people (preferring a backyard gathering of less than 50) lasting only a few hours (as opposed to the 8-hour day in the example) using natural light. And, of course, all the related Engagement and Bridal pix!
Please note: this is only the wedding day itself! Your photographer is spending several hours before the event to make sure all their equipment is in proper working order, batteries are charged, digital file cards are formatted, etc. Then they are spending hours after the day processing the photos, culling through them for the best, editing as necessary to make sure horizons are straight, color and lighting are correct, and more. Then after you've selected the images you like best, they'll spend hours designing your keepsake albums and wall prints and whatever else you've requested, checking your order when it arrives to make sure the professional lab has processed everything correctly before delivering it to you.
