For You, For Others

Today is my husband’s birthday. I’ll take photos of him, at some point, and he’ll laugh at me for doing so. He’s learned that this is what I do – take photos – and he might as well accept it. What I also know is that, secretly, he’s flattered. It makes him feel special that I’m lavishing that bit of attention on him. Appreciated. Loved. That’s not why I’m taking these images, however. I’m selfishly doing it for me. I want to remember the good times we’re having together, to capture the journey we’re on together, and to commemorate his life. As morbid as it may be, one day, we won’t be here anymore. All that will be left are memories; photographs help the memories last a bit longer. Proof we were here. We existed. And we were important to someone. These photographs will be shared by family and friends, reminders of our relationships and this time in our lives.

Don’t feel like you have anyone to share your photos with? Do it just for you, then. Let the images be reminders to you of this time in your life: a time you thought of yourself. You are important. Celebrate that and celebrate your love for yourself.
