Consider these images side by side:

Sure, Kristin’s photo on the left shows she’s a beautiful girl, clearly having a good time… and if she posted this picture on Facebook, I’m sure she’d get lots of compliments. The professional photographer in me, however, is a bit more critical: she’s turned away a bit too far, has lots of “hot spots” and harsh lighting from the sun, and there’s a washed-out, bland sky. I do understand that sometimes this can’t be helped, especially at an event like a wedding, where people and settings are changing all the time… BUT

if it’s a professional portrait shoot, your photographer should move you to an area with more even light, pose you toward the camera for better connection, and pay attention to the background (and foreground) of the image.

Lots of people take good pictures. The question is whether they can do it consistently, and better. Evaluate images with a critical eye: composition, pose, light, proper focus, retouching, and attention to detail. Watch for things like always-centered subjects (boring), engaging body language, squinting, mottled sunlight, undereye shadows, over processed skin, and the like. My job is to make you look good, so I’m going to be very, very picky! Not only will you get the compliments, but they’ll be well-deserved.
